The city of Spearfish is in the far Northwest part of the Black Hills National Forest. Founded in 1876 at the mouth of the Spearfish Canyon, the city was originally called ‘Queen City’ and once founded, quickly became a supplier for the mining camps in the nearby hills. Today, Spearfish is viewed by many as a hidden gem in the Black Hills, where you can mix great quality of life with plentiful outdoor activities and unique tourist attractions.

Spearfish Canyon Scenic Byway provides several waterfalls and hiking trails including: Roughlock Falls, Little Spearfish Falls Trail, 76 Trail and the Community Caves Trail. Experienced climbers can also test their rock climbing skills throughout the Canyon. The Canyon also is a favorite place to take a weekend drive, especially during the Fall when people from across the country come to view the canyon’s artistic abilities when the leaves begin to change colors. If that is not enough, Spearfish is also home to miles of worldclass mountain bike trails. If you want to stay and play in the area, Iron Creek Lake and Campground is a great choice for you!
Spearfish is the proud home of the Black Hills State University, the 3rd largest comprehensive public university that offers both undergraduate and graduate programs. It offers a 123 acre campus just minutes from downtown.
Spearfish elementary schools are split by grade. Kindergarteners goes to the Mountain View Elementary located just off east Jackson Blvd near the interstate, 1st and 2nd grades go to the West Elementary school which is closer to the college, and 3rd ,4th and 5th grades attend the Creek Side Elementary. Spearfish High School and Spearfish Middle School are both located off North Ave by the Hospital.
94.4% of residents 25 and older are a high school graduate or higher, and 29.7% of residents 25 and older have at least Bachelor’s degree.
